The character 藥 in Chinese which refers to a medicine or a drug was originated from a lower part, 樂, which means music or happiness and a top part , 艹, which means grass or herb. The combination gives us an insight into how ancient Chinese understood medicine.

Taoism and confucianism are evident in Chinese medicine early scripts. The earliest book known of Chinese medicine is Huan DI Nei Jing ( the yellow emperor’s inner classic). It was written as a conversation between the yellow emperor and his physician Qibo. (200 bc, 200 ac). According to the Neijing, the universe is composed of various forces and principles, such as Yin and Yang, Qi and the Five Elements. These forces can be understood via rational means and a human can stay in balance or return to balance and health by understanding the laws of these natural forces.

In Chinese teaching, human is a microcosm that mirrors the universe ( the larger macrocosm )

The goal of medicine is to keep up happy, healthy and in harmony and balance with nature and the universe.

It reminds us that life is a symphony.
